Guns In schools

The Parkland Shooting has riled up a lot of people's emotions and rightfully so. School shootings shouldn't be something normal, yet it is. This shooting has now made history as one of the deadliest school shootings. Before Columbine was considered the most catastrophic. Now, Parkland has been ranked in the 10 deadliest mass shootings. There have been many cries for gun control, like banning assault weapons, but those calls have gone unanswered.

Now there is ludicrous proposition stating that teachers should be armed with weapons. There are so many things that can go wrong. Even though I'm not a parent, the thought of putting a gun in the hands of some timid individual is just asinine. Arming teachers with guns are pending lawsuits. The guns could be potentially stolen by students. Is the district prepared for an instance if the teacher feels threatened then decides to shoot the student? Florida is a stand your ground state which would be very detrimental if the student is brown.

Then it was proposed that teachers with military backgrounds should only carry. This was a little easier to stomach but then I thought about their mental state. What guidelines are going to be in place for them? When there is no mental test needed to buy one?

Most schools have police officers on site which is only for middle and high school students. In recent years, there are some schools that lock the campus down once school starts. To give students, parents, teachers a better sense of security add metal detectors on campus. Teachers don’t need to be armed with guns. They need to be equipped with better tools, so they can do their job. It’s other things our tax dollars can be allocated towards to make the next generation better.
